Schisandra Berry is generally regarded as safe, even though toxicity and
adverse reaction testing has not been well-documented, with the only reported
side effects being dizziness or diarrhea, which can be mitigated by reducing
dosage. Schisandra may induce uterine contraction, and therefore should
be avoided by pregnant women. (0)
What is not well researched is the interaction between ingesting Schizandra
Berry and modern pharmaceutical drugs.
No significant drug interactions have been reported, but Schisandra chinensis
may induce cytochrome P450 and other hepatic metabolic pathways. (1)
Schisandra was shown to significantly inhibit P-glycoprotein and can therefore
interfere with drugs that are transported by P-glycoprotein. (2)
Schisandra was shown to induce CYP3A, and may interfere with drugs that
are metabolized via this enzyme. (3)
The drugs Tacrolimus (Prograf), Cyclosporine, and Warfarin (Coumadin),
have been shown to interact with Schizandra Berry. A drug interaction tool
using Schizandra Berry as a filter is available here.
Natural herbs are generally known to be easier on the body than concentrated,
chemically derived drugs. However, this does not necessarily mean they have
no side effects. Below are links to web sites providing additional information
and possible side effects or interactions related to ingesting Schizandra
